The Non-SEO Side of Starting a Successful Online Business

January 25th, 2012

If there’s one thing that’s been hammered into your head as an aspiring Internet entrepreneur, it’s search engine optimization. In a world where anyone connected to the web is almost always conducting a web search, ensuring you are able to be found via Google and other search engines is essential. But do not make the mistake of thinking good SEO is the only thing it takes to earn income through the Internet. Just like any other business, at the end of the day you need to be providing people with something they can’t get anywhere else.

Here are five things that are just as vital as good SEO when getting an e-business started:
Shipping arrangements: If you’re providing goods as opposed to a more blog-related venture, then getting your shipping sorted should be a top priority. You do not want to be undersold by a competitor through a lousy shipping rate due to lack of research or concern.

Payment arrangements: How will customers make their purchases? How will you pay guest writers? Whether it’s through PayPal or some other online money transfer, this is a critical step no online business can afford to overlook. You don’t want to end up doing business with a shady middleman, so research your chosen transfer service before making a commitment.

Hosting arrangements: Web hosting is one, if not, the most important aspect of running a successful online business. Whether blogging or building custom-made baskets, visitors are going to have a hard time reading any information from your website if your choice in host was a poor one. Don’t just pick the first service that pops up, take the time to choose carefully.

Tax arrangements: If you make money online, then the earnings are subject to state and federal income tax just like anything else you make throughout the year. As your e-business grows, adjust your tax rate to reflect the changes. Otherwise you could wind up owing way more than you thought.

The law: The frontier of online income earning is still yet to be tamed completely by government rules and regulations. But that doesn’t mean that the FTC hasn’t taken steps to reduce the level of spam-sources of Internet moneymaking. Before you go ahead with that link-packed site, make sure you aren’t setting yourself up for a shutdown in six months.

SEO is essential in building a successful online enterprise. But so are several other aspects of making your money through the Internet. Take these subjects as seriously as you do your search rankings, and you’re certain to see your small online business grow stronger.
